Bethany & Jesse’s Beacon Maternity Session

Last week, I spent some time in Beacon with Bethany & Jesse documenting them as they near the arrival of their first baby. It was such a perfect evening and we found ourselves getting sentimental – first, in their backyard as the light turned golden and reminded us so much of their engagement session two years ago in Rhinebeck, and then as the wind kicked up at Long Dock Park, blowing Bethany’s hair and dress SO perfectly, just like it did on their wedding day in Piermont. I feel really lucky to be able to work with people I genuinely love, and having the privilege to watch their families grow over the years is easily my favorite part of this work. Congratulations, Bethany & Jesse! I can’t wait to meet your little one!

    the Fletcher Family

We laughed, we played, we made goldfish crackers swim in the river – I had the best time hanging out at the park with these three on this sunny April afternoon.

      Raven Rose

When I had my shop in Beacon, I always had my eye on the gorgeous space across the street, which featured this really beautiful brick archway and so much natural light. I knew it would make the most perfect space for an airy, plant-filled gift shop, so when Courtney moved in, fresh off the heals of a round-the-world journey, I was really excited to see what she would do with the place. She has a great energy about her and her eye for good finds and design really resonates with me… which worked out really well when I moved – a lot of items from my shop found a new home in hers!. I also really admire the determination it took to take an existing business, learn a whole new skill on the fly, and make it her own. She contacted me recently to photograph some arrangements to feature on her new website in time for Mother’s Day, so I got to spend last Tuesday morning back on Main Street Beacon hanging out in this beautiful shop window surrounded by stunning florals. Does it get any better than that?

Jess & John’s Engagement Session at Awosting Falls

Ohh winter engagement sessions, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

        1. I love Johnny & Jess. They are the sweetest, most down to earth couple, and I love that they are such good friends. Those smitten sideways looks they give each other also give me major heart eyes.
        2. Maybe all engagement sessions should start with beers and chats? I love when we incorporate beer, or coffee, or food, or whatever you’re into, into engagement photos. One time it was shots of Jamieson at 9am. One time it was pancakes at a diner, one time it was forties under the most gorgeous weeping beech tree. YOU GUYS DO YOU! I am here for it!
        3. I cannot get enough of this soft diffused winter light, bouncing off of all the snow and ice, creating ideal lighting conditions for those of us who spend so much of our lives calculating best light based on sunrise and sunset. Winter time? IT’S ALL GOLD.
        4. The Ice. It’s beautiful! It’s cold. It’s SO slippery, and also incredibly entertaining. I almost ate it going down the trail to the falls, but after some very cartoon-like flailing, managed to catch myself. I swear, my camera is some sort of magical falling-deterrent, because I gain a ton of grace and dumb luck the moment that thing is in my hand. Unfortunately, not everyone is so lucky. While we were tucked into an alcove on one of the trails, one hiker took a big spill and laid there laughing so hard for a full five minutes before she was able to claw her way over to a spot with a bit more traction. We did make sure she was ok and offered assistance before we all joined her laughter. That ice, it really brings people together!
        5. Awosting Falls is gorgeous. It’s basically a photographer’s dream location, which makes run ins with industry friends (Hi, Alicia!) an added bonus.
        6. Kateigh actually deserves like 5/6 of the numbers on this list. Not only is she my long time friend / other half, but she is crazy talented and we work so well together. Over the years, I’ve learned that having an associate photographer shoot a wedding under your name only works if you trust them 100% to capture a wedding the same way you would, and that’s not something I’m willing to compromise on. To expand on that, half of the photos in this post were taken by me and half were taken by Kateigh, with all post-production work done by me. Can you tell the difference?I’m so excited to have a handful of close colleagues who I’ve worked alongside over the past few years who can seamlessly fill my shoes on the wedding day when I can’t physically be there. The biggest bonus for me, though, is doing fun engagement sessions like this where we literally laugh the entire time and create pure magic together. Hashtag dream team.

          Mae Elizabeth

Sweet Mae was my first session of 2019 at just a few days old, and she really set the tone for this year. Her mom saw one of my favorite newborn photos of all time (Rosemary’s yawn) and reached out, and we were on the same page from the start. This session is one I’m so proud of. I hope that years down the road, when Mandy, Ryan, and Mae look into this room, they remember the little moments of newborn sweetness that we captured there.

Strong women, may we know them
          may we be them
          may we raise them

            Playing With Light

It’s great to have a live-in hunk of ham on call for modeling when it’s 9 on a Tuesday morning and the light is pouring in through the old blinds on your front windows and you just need to play in that stripe-y goodness. It also helps if they blow raspberries and giggle and yell “MAAAAAM” the whole time. #idealclient

Tiffany & Carlos’s Alpaca Ranch Engagement Sesson

The most difficult part of kicking off these blog posts again was deciding which of my ridiculously awesome shoots from the past year to start with. Do I go in chronological order? Reverse chronological order? Favorites? As I was browsing through, trying to nail down my approach, I got to Tiffany & Carlos’s Engagement Session at Highland Airs Alpaca Ranch and stopped. When faced with the quandary of where to begin the obvious answer is always, of course, alpacas.

When Tiffany and I started talking about their engagement session, she asked if it would be okay to do it at an alpaca ranch, and I had to try to play it cool about my excitement (real talk: I did not play it cool). For future reference, if anyone ever wants animals involved in any kind of session, my answer will always be an adamant yes. I AM DOWN.

Highland Airs is home to 26 alpacas and 1 llama. The owner, and his husky-wolf pup, graciously showed us around, introduced us to the alpacas and educated us about their personalities, hair, and shows (some of them are award winning!). It was incredible being in such close proximity to the animals, and it was awesome getting to know Tiffany and Carlos throughout. As I’m sure you can imagine, we laughed a LOT. My favorite part of the whole session, though, is that it really is such a classic and beautiful engagement shoot – the photos are sweet and romantic! They’re just enhanced with the photobombing alpacas. I can’t go though this gallery without chuckling (which I just did in a coffee shop by myself, ps, not weird at all).

                Sybil

Wedding, maternity, baby, maternity, baby, other various shoots that we won’t get into. The Hendersons are some of my favorite people, and I absolutely love documenting all of their milestones. Photographing Sybil was so reminiscent of photographing Evelynn at this age, and incorporating their mom’s wedding fur brought me back to one of the best nights of my career …OKAY, LIFE! Best nights of my life! (Zac Brown was there! We did shots! It was magical!). Welcome, baby Sybil – you are so loved, and lucky to be a part of such a beautiful, down to earth, and genuinely awesome family. And sweet girl, they are so lucky to have you, too.

                  Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! And happy almost anniversary since the last time I posted a blog… oops. While I’m not crazy about the fact that I’ve been mostly MIA on social media and the blog over the past year, I’ve spent my time photographing beautiful weddings and engagements, new babies and growing families, my own baby! …who also requires a lot of time off-camera, who knew? And then, in the peak of wedding season, we decided to buy a house! Actually, we decided to buy a house much earlier in the year, we just really lucked out in having the closing fall right in that sweet spot of time where everything else was INSANE, because that’s how things always happen, isn’t it?

As the holidays wind down and the quietness of January settles in, I am taking some giant deep breaths for the first time in forever, and wondering how it’s been a year since I’ve updated this space, and also, I have a ten month old now? A talking, almost-walking, personality-filled charmer, who calls me “MAAAAHHH!” and “MAAAAAAAM” and “Amamamamama” and will immediately perk up and cheese for the camera when he spots one. Is anyone surprised?

This year is already off to a great start, and as I finish delivering my final few galleries from 2018, I’m excited to revitalize this space and start sharing some of my favorite shoots from the past year. Thanks so much for being here.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

                  xo Jac

                    the Hendersons

Evelynn Grace, I am so in love with you. No surprise, of course – your parents are awesome. I am absolutely amazed that such a big, hilarious, spunky personality fits into such a tiny, beautiful little girl.
